Gedong Kertya Singaraja
     Gedong Kertya is located in Veteran street, is a manuscript library being the only one of it's kind in Indonesia. it contains collections and copies of hand written texts dealing with Balinese Literature, Myths, Medicines, Magic formulas, Religious texts and others on specially prepared palm leaf strips.
     The Palm leaf strips are first engraved and the rubbed with charcoal to make the engraved and the rubbed with charcoal to make the engraving legible. The Manuscripts numbering the thousands are kept it steel boxes. people come from far and near to consult the texts. these palm leaf books are known as "Lontar". there are futher samples of prasasti", incribed metal plates among the earliest written documents found on the island.
     The library was built during the colonial period in 1928 under the initiative of the then Resident of  Bali and Lombok L.J.J.Caron. The library was formarly named after two Dutch experts of Balinese culture, F.A. Liefrinch and Dr. Van Der Tuuk with another Dutchman Dr. Gorris being the curator.
